This notice may be cited as the Nature Conservation (Macropod Harvest Period 2021) Notice 2020.
This notice commences on 1 January 2021.
The dictionary in schedule 2 defines particular words used in this notice.
(1)The harvest period for a harvest macropod starts, for each harvest zone and harvest region, on 1 January 2021 and ends at the end of—(a)if the chief executive has published a notice under subsection (2) for the harvest macropod for the harvest zone or harvest region—the day stated in the notice; or(b)otherwise—31 December 2021.(2)The chief executive may publish a notice stating the harvest period for a harvest macropod for a harvest zone or harvest region ends on a stated day, before 31 December 2021, if the chief executive is satisfied—(a)the relevant maximum amount for the harvest macropod in the harvest zone or harvest region is likely to be taken in 2021 by the stated day; or(b)it is necessary to end the harvest period for the harvest macropod for the harvest zone or harvest region on the stated day because an event has reduced, or is likely to reduce, the population size for the macropod in the zone or region.flood, disease outbreak(3)The notice must—(a)state—(i)the matter of which the chief executive is satisfied under subsection (2)(a) or (b); and(ii)the day the harvest period for the harvest macropod for the harvest zone or harvest region ends; and(b)be published on the department’s website on or before the stated day.(4)In this section—estimated population size, for a harvest macropod in a harvest zone or harvest region, means the population size estimated in 2020 by the chief executive for the macropod in the zone or region for 2021.relevant maximum amount means—(a)for an eastern grey kangaroo—(i)for the central east harvest region—15% of the estimated population size for the kangaroo in the region; or(ii)for the eastern harvest zone—10% of the estimated population size for the kangaroo in the zone; or(b)for a red kangaroo—(i)for the central east harvest region—20% of the estimated population size for the kangaroo in the region; or(ii)for the central north harvest region—20% of the estimated population size for the kangaroo in the region; or(iii)for the eastern harvest zone—10% of the estimated population size for the kangaroo in the zone; or(iv)for the western harvest zone—10% of the estimated population size for the kangaroo in the zone; or(c)for a common wallaroo—(i)for the central east harvest region—15% of the estimated population size for the wallaroo in the region; or(ii)for the central south harvest region—7.5% of the estimated population size for the wallaroo in the region; or(iii)for the eastern harvest zone—10% of the estimated population size for the wallaroo in the zone; or(iv)for the western harvest zone—10% of the estimated population size for the wallaroo in the zone.
5Notice to holders of macropod harvesting licences
(1)If the chief executive publishes, or intends to publish, a notice under section 4(2) (the section 4 notice) for a harvest macropod for a harvest zone or harvest region, the chief executive must give each holder of a macropod harvesting licence for the macropod a written notice stating—(a)the matter of which the chief executive is satisfied under section 4(2)(a) or (b) for the macropod for the zone or region; and(b)the day the harvest period for the macropod for the zone or region ends under the section 4 notice.(2)The chief executive must give the notice to the holder at least 7 days before the day the harvest period ends under the section 4 notice.
6Conditions on taking harvest macropods
(1)This section states, for the Nature Conservation (Macropod) Conservation Plan 2017, section 12(1), conditions on the taking of harvest macropods during the harvest period.(2)The holder of a macropod harvesting licence must not take—(a)an eastern grey kangaroo in—(i)the central north harvest region; or(ii)the central south harvest region; or(iii)the western harvest zone; or(b)a red kangaroo in the central south harvest region; or(c)a common wallaroo in the central north harvest region.(3)When taking a harvest macropod, the holder of a macropod harvesting licence must comply with the document called ‘National code of practice for the humane shooting of kangaroos and wallabies for commercial purposes’, dated November 2020 and published by AgriFutures Australia, to the extent the document provides for the way in which the macropod may be taken.
For the Nature Conservation (Macropod) Conservation Plan 2017, section 13(2), there is no minimum area of skin of a harvest macropod.
For the Nature Conservation (Macropod) Conservation Plan 2017, section 14(2)—(a)there is no minimum whole weight for the carcass of a harvest macropod; and(b)there is no minimum dressed weight for the carcass of a harvest macropod.
This notice expires on 31 December 2021.

central east harvest region means the area consisting of the local government areas mentioned in schedule 1, part 1, division 1.
central harvest zone means the area consisting of the local government areas mentioned in schedule 1, part 1.
central north harvest region means the area consisting of the local government areas mentioned in schedule 1, part 1, division 2.
central south harvest region means the area consisting of the local government areas mentioned in schedule 1, part 1, division 3.
eastern harvest zone means the area consisting of the local government areas mentioned in schedule 1, part 2.
harvest macropod means—
(a)an eastern grey kangaroo (Macropus giganteus); or
(b)a red kangaroo (Osphranter rufus); or
(c)a common wallaroo (Osphranter robustus).
harvest region means—
(a)the central east harvest region; or
(b)the central north harvest region; or
(c)the central south harvest region.
harvest zone means—
(a)the central harvest zone; or
(b)the eastern harvest zone; or
(c)the western harvest zone.
western harvest zone means the area consisting of the local government areas mentioned in schedule 1, part 3.
